Our Veterinarians' Bios

Scott Shuler

Veterinarian Scott ShulerI grew up in Iowa and attended Iowa State University for both undergraduate and veterinary school. After graduating from vet school in 1999, my soon-to-be wife and classmate, Carrie Fleming, and I moved to Portland and immediately fell in love with the city. I worked in downtown Portland for 5 years, and then Carrie and I decided to move to Atlanta, so she could pursue a fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the meantime, I worked at a very progressive practice that allowed me to hone my medical and surgical skills. We also added two boys to the family, which already included our dogs, Dolly and Mesa, and our cats, Smokey and Sketchy. When Carrie completed her fellowship, we looked at dozens of practices. NW Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital was the perfect fit.

I adore all aspects of my job, especially educating clients on their animal’s health. My special areas of interest are surgery and geriatric care. In my spare time, I enjoy playing with my kids – two and four-legged – hiking, camping, and fishing.

Kim Maun

Veterinarian Kim MaunI started my veterinary career over 10 years ago at NW Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital after completing my Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State University. I have enjoyed growing with the clinic and being a part of your pets’ lives. Over the years, I have taken a special interest in ophthalmology (eye) and feline medicine.

I believe that it is very important to give back to the Portland community. Every month, I host a wellness clinic for the pets of homeless youth at New Avenues for Youth.

My cat, Iris, presides over our NE Portland home, which she kindly shares with my husband and our lab/hound mix, Hilo. We snowboard religiously, love to cook, and enjoy working in our garden.

Carrie Fleming

Veterinarian Carrie FlemingDr. Shuler and I consider it an honor to care for your pets. Portland became our home in 1999, after we completed our Doctorates in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University. I started my career at a 24-hour emergency facility and quickly realized I missed the relationships that general family medicine could provide. While practicing in Beaverton, I completed my Masters in Public Health from Oregon Health Sciences University. I was then accepted into the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. In Spring 2008, we came home to Portland to take ownership of NW Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital. I adamantly promote preventative medicine and of course, general health and wellness for our four-legged family members.

We have a large family. Dolly, our boxer, and Mesa, our mastiff/pit bull mix continue to amaze us with their strength and personality. Our boys, Aidan and Nate, keep them going.

Colleen Flaherty

I grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York on a childhood full of snowball fights and family pets. I obtained my degree in veterinary medicine from Cornell University in 2004 and spent my first few years as a veterinarian in western Massachusetts until I could no longer ignore the call of the West and relocated to Portland.

I am happy to call Portland home and consider myself fortunate to be a part of the amazing team at Northwest Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital. I enjoy working closely with clients to foster happy, healthy bonds with their pets and I have a special interest for preventative medicine, client education, soft tissue surgery and sports medicine. In addition to general practice, I enjoy sharing my time with Guide Dogs, the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and the HSVMA’s rural veterinary program.

My life outside the veterinary hospital is filled with cyclocross racing, telemark skiing, DIY projects and road trips in “Betty” the VW campervan. My 4-legged friends include Yonkers, a guide dog flunky, and Klister the Blister, a barn cat turned couch potato.
