Canines Are a Key to Cardiac Health

February is Heart Month, and if you have a dog, he or she could be doing more for your heart than just making it feel warm with affection.

According to an article published in Harvard Medical School’s online journal, several studies have shown that pet ownership—and having a dog in particular—is likely associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Research has consistently shown that dog owners have lower blood pressure, and there is evidence that associates having a canine companion with lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. While these studies don’t point to a direct link, they do show that pet ownership can be a strong component of a strategy to lower the risk of heart disease.

The conclusion? An investment in your pet’s health may just be an investment in your own! To schedule an appointment for the cold nose that warms your heart, call us at 503-227-6047.
