Boarding your dog is often a necessity when you travel and can’t take your pet with you. Most dogs love the socialization and playtime, however, it is important to keep in mind there are some risks involved. Kennel cough (canine infectious tracheobronchitis) is a common upper respiratory infection found in dogs. Also known as Bordetella, this highly contagious disease spreads quickly between dogs in close proximity. If your pet experiences a dry hacking cough, fever or lethargy soon after boarding, they may have developed kennel cough.
Treatment varies according to infection severity. In mild cases, it is generally left to run its course. Antibiotics and a cough suppressant may be prescribed if symptoms are more severe. Pneumonia can develop, particularly in puppies and older dogs, resulting in fever, lack of appetite, and lethargy. There is a vaccine available for high-risk dogs that are in close contact with other animals frequently. Most boarding facilities require a kennel cough vaccine within the last year before they will allow a dog to stay. Although not providing complete immunity, it will lessen symptoms and hasten the recovery period. Our veterinarians will discuss your dog’s possible exposure opportunities during your yearly wellness exam and determine if the kennel cough vaccine is needed. Most of our dogs are around other dogs on a regular basis whether at the dog park, doggy day care, groomer or at a kennel and would benefit from the having the vaccine.
