Winter is a potentially dangerous season for pets. Every year thousands of animals die when temperatures drop. Cold weather and icy conditions leave outdoor animals particularly at-risk. While some breeds are well suited for the cold, most animals should be kept indoors as much as possible. If pets are outside for extended periods of time, they must have access to a dry wind resistant shelter and fresh water. Walks and other outdoor exercise should be brief to limit exposure and ward off conditions like frostbite and hypothermia. Your pet’s paws are particularly vulnerable to cold-weather injuries such as ice accumulation and chemicals like antifreeze. Make sure to check them often and wipe down their feet and legs when returning indoors.
