We hope you and your pets have been enjoying the sunny weather! It is important to keep in mind that springtime is flea and tick season. These pesky critters lurk in our yards, parks and favorite hiking trails, targeting pets as they run past. Fleas and ticks can transmit dangerous diseases like Lyme disease and typhus, as well as cause painful dermatological conditions, making their treatment and prevention an important component of seasonal pet care.
There are a number of extremely effective parasite prevention medications available in oral and topical forms. These work by killing adult fleas and ticks. Northwest Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital strongly recommends that all pets be put on a regular flea and tick prevention program to ensure they remain healthy and safe. Even if your pet is on a preventative, be sure to examine their coat and skin especially around the ears, face, and belly after outdoor activities like hiking or walks. If you discover fleas or ticks, please contact your veterinarian for immediate removal and treatment. If a tick is removed within 48 hours after attaching, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease cannot be transmitted and your pet will not get the disease.
