Pet Nutritional Counseling

Each pet has his or her own unique nutritional requirements. Determining which pet food is most appropriate can be difficult, especially since your pet will change over time. That’s why at each wellness exam, our veterinarians will discuss pet nutrition and which foods are best suited to your pet’s current needs.

Puppies and kittens require proper nutrients and calories to help them grow. However, the same formula that works for a small breed puppy, such as a Chihuahua, would not be appropriate for a larger breed, such as a Saint Bernard. Our veterinarians will help you determine which pet food is best for your new pet.

For adult dogs and cats, it’s important to be sure that they are receiving quality food to maintain good health. However, too much of a good thing could result in unwanted consequences, so portion control is key. Obesity can lead to everything from cat or dog arthritis to respiratory disease. It is also the number one cause of feline diabetes. We will evaluate your pet to ensure that he or she is at a healthy weight and in good physical condition.

As senior pets begin to slow down, their activity level decreases. At this time, it may be appropriate to change pet food formulas to decrease their caloric intake while also providing the essential nutrients their aging bodies need. For example, the addition of certain omega fatty acids has been found to greatly improve mobility in dogs.

Treating Conditions and Diseases

Altering a pet’s diet in response to food allergies makes sense, but did you know that dietary changes could also benefit pets with inhalant allergies? As a matter of fact, diet plays a key role in the treatment of many pet health conditions and diseases. This includes everything from kidney, liver, and heart disease to cancer, pet dental disease, and urinary disorders such as bladder stones.

We carry a full line of prescription and maintenance diets at our veterinary hospital for your convenience. Some of the pet food brands we have on hand include Hill’s, Purina, and Royal Canin.
